Conor McGregor Hints at Quick Return After "Christmas Break"

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:13 p.m. ET

After the MMA community seemed to accept that Conor McGregor won’t be back soon, a recent interview with the lightweight champion hints otherwise.

After capturing the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez back in November at UFC 205, Conor McGregor revealed his plan to take some time for the birth of his first child. The early rumors stated the hiatus would last about 10 months, which would have McGregor returning by around September to (presumably) defend his lightweight championship.

McGregor himself, however, hasn’t committed to a specific return date and could. As usual with Conor McGregor, it could very well hinge on the amount of money being offered for his return.

In a recent interview with RTE Sports, Conor stated “I know Dana has been on record being like, ’10 months, he’s taking 10 months off.’ Where did you [get] 10 months? I’m weighing my options,” McGregor said. “I’m ready for anything.”

“I did say I was going to take a break, but a Christmas break,” McGregor continued. “The holidays, at least give me the holidays off. We’ll see what happens in the future.”

“Ari, Patrick, the new owners from WME-IMG, the guys that bought the UFC for $4 billion, I want to speak to them,” he said. “I want to see what their plan is. Because right now I don’t know what nobody’s plan is.”

With Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson all but scheduled to fight for the right to face Conor McGregor for the lightweight strap, the UFC should probably get on to making that fight a reality sooner rather than later. Conor McGregor does not like to be kept waiting, especially not with some other combat sports opportunities offering a little more… “Money”. Buckle up fight fans, 2017 might not be as slow as everyone’s believing.
