Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero official for UFC 205 in NYC


After weeks of uncertainty, New York native Chris Weidman finds a place on the first UFC card in New York.
The former middleweight champion will be fighting No. 4 ranked middleweight Yoel Romero at the historic Madison Square Garden on Nov. 12. The news was made official this morning as UFC President Dana White released the news on The Boomer and Carton show. There will be a press conference later today to reveal the entire lineup and discuss the event with the fighters.
Weidman has been adamant from the beginning that he wanted to part of the inaugural MMA event in his home state. Word began circulating weeks ago that this fight was in the works, but it was never finalized due to conflicting terms. Weidman, who lost his belt to Luke Rockhold back in December of 2015, has been rehabbing a few injuries. He was hoping for a title shot soon his return, but the champ Michael Bisping is already scheduled to fight Dan Henderson in October at UFC 204. Weidman is one of seven current or former champions on this stacked New York card.
Yoel Romero (11-1) hinted last night via his Instagram that this fight was all but done. He is currently riding a seven-fight win streak, with his most recent victory coming over No. 3 ranked Jacare Souza at UFC 194.
In his last seven fights Romero has earned four performance bonuses. He is a very exciting fighter who is looking to earn a title shot with a win over the former champ on the biggest stage is sports.
