Anthony Pettis to Khabib Nurmagomedov: Karma is a b*tch

Published May. 6, 2015 6:45 p.m. ET

After it was announced that Khabib Nurmagomedov had re-injured his knee and would not compete against Donald Cerrone at UFC 187 for a shot at the lightweight championship, former champ Anthony Pettis wasted little time in taunting the Russian on Twitter.

After Pettis won the lightweight title, he suffered repeated injuries and had to wait over a year to fight again, before making a title defense in December against Gilbert Melendez. During that time, and immediately afterwards, Nurmagomedov repeatedly insulted Pettis and suggested that he was not a real champion, because of his injuries.

Though Pettis later clarified that he doesn't wish injuries on anyone, not even rivals, he did explain the frustration behind his tweet during a recent interview with MMASucka.com. "He was talking big crap when I was injured, how I was a paper champ and scared to fight people," he said.

"I don't wish injury on [Nurmagomedov]...I hope he gets better and if he is one of the best in the lightweight division we should see it coming up in a couple of months here. He needs to quiet down a little bit, humble himself and just focus on getting better."

Pettis understandably appears to not be able to help feeling a little bit of satisfaction that Nurmagomedov is now getting a little bit of his own medicine. "He probably didn't wish injuries [on other fighters], but when you talk about injuries and you talk about other people when they are hurt, it happens to you," he said.

"That's why I said it to him."

While the Russian wrestler hopes for a fall return to the Octagon, Pettis will next fight Myles Jury July 25 near his Milwaukee home in Chicago. In his previous fight, Pettis was upset by Rafael dos Anjos via decision.
