Ricardo Lamas may get his long awaited shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo on Super Bowl weekend in 2014, but the final decision is yet to be made.
UFC president Dana White revealed when speaking to FOX Sports on Thursday that the promotion is considering an Aldo vs. Lamas matchup for the upcoming UFC pay-per-view card landing in Newark, New Jersey on Feb 1, 2014.
"We're talking about that Super Bowl weekend," White said. "It's not done yet. We're talking about it, we talk about a lot of things."
White insisted that the fight has not been made yet because there are still some internal discussions happening about both the upcoming Super Bowl weekend card as well as Aldo's next opponent, but Lamas appears to be the leading candidate.
A winner of four fights in a row, Lamas has been rumored for a title shot for months ever since he was forced out of a scheduled fight at UFC 162 when his original opponent Chan Sung Jung aka 'The Korean Zombie' was yanked to fight Aldo at UFC 163.
Lamas was already presumably a No. 1 contender after dismantling Erik Koch in his last fight in January, but he ended up sitting out and waiting after losing his bout at UFC 162 at the last minute.
Now all signs are pointing towards Lamas getting a much desired title shot, but the UFC still has some decisions to make before announcing anything as official.
