Akira Corassani suffers concussion and shattered nose from illegal knee strike
Akira Corassani's night ended early at The Ultimate Fighter 18 finale on Saturday when opponent Maximo Blanco unloaded a huge knee strike that blasted him straight in the face causing the fight to be stopped.
Because Corassani's knee was still on the mat at the time, Blanco's strike was deemed illegal. When Corassani rose from the ground he was still dazed and unable to see straight and so the fight was stopped and Blanco was disqualified for the illegal blow.
On Sunday as he made his way back home to New York, Corassani updated his condition to let everyone know that the knee strike uncorked by Blanco ended up shattering his nose in five places. He also states that the knee that landed also gave him a concussion, which could be the worse injury in the long term.
The former Ultimate Fighter alum posted pictures of the x-ray on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
"Broke my nose in 5 places, which was not as bad as the concussion from the knee," Corassani wrote. "The dizziness got worse gradually and I was rocked as hell. Truthfully I don't remember much but this was not the way I wanted to win, I was more than ready for this fight and due to a stupid move the fight was ruined."
Corassani was returning to action following a two fight win streak inside the Octagon. He recently took two full months off from training to allow his body to heal after a rough road of injuries he suffered following his time on The Ultimate Fighter season 14.
Unfortunately now it appears Corassani will have to rest even longer to allow his broken nose to heal as well as the symptoms he will experience from the concussion.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission will issue medical suspensions from the show most likely on Monday and that will determine the minimum time Corassani will have to sit out before returning to the Octagon.
