5 Reasons WWE Should Sign Ronda Rousey

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:13 a.m. ET

With rumors circulating of Rousey’s imminent departure from the world of MMA, will she turn to WWE and enter the squared circle?

The big news right now is that internationally-recognized fighter Ronda Rousey might be done with MMA. If true, this has the potential to be a huge gain for WWE. Ronda Rousey is a known wrestling fan, and was even involved in a segment at WrestleMania 31. At that event, she got physical with Stephanie McMahon, which, at the time, led to wild speculation over future ‘Mania matches.

Sadly, nothing ever materialized from that Stephanie/Rousey confrontation. But now, with this news, WWE should take advantage and sign her as soon as possible.

Ronda Rousey is an enormous name around the world. In 2015, she was the 3rd most Googled person during that entire year. She has been lauded as one of the best female fighters ever by many publications. In many ways, she’d be a perfect fit for WWE.

WWE is in dire need of new stars for its programming. There appears to be a lot of contradictions and other major issues when it comes to them building home-grown talent. This is why there has been an emphasis on talent from outside coming in to help build the rosters up.

We’ve seen a more frequently pushed women’s division, a restored cruiserweight division, and more tournaments on the WWE Network. With so many new faces popping up in WWE at this time, Ronda Rousey and WWE should take advantage of the rumors circulating to come to an agreement.

Doing so would be mutually beneficial. Rousey would be able to enter a pro wrestling ring and WWE would have a major star on their roster. As for other reasons why she should sign, here are five of the most important ones…

5. She Has the Legitimacy of a Real Fighter

WWE’s women’s roster is sorely lacking in legitimate badasses. While that division is becoming a big draw on its own, it can only go so far when the top women’s wrestlers are all so…similar.

Think about it. Bayley, Sasha, Charlotte and Becky are the top four women’s wrestlers in WWE. all of them are pretty much the same in their styles: technically-sound chain grapplers with a proficiency in submission holds and a tendency to deliver death-defying aerial maneuvers. Yes, their matches are, on the whole, exciting. But there needs to be some contrast with their match styles in order for the division to feel deeper and more diverse.

Enter Ronda Rousey.

Seeing a female Brock Lesnar enter the ring and demolish the other women with stiff strikes and legitimately dangerous submission holds would add a whole new element to the women’s division. Rousey would do to the women’s roster what Lesnar has done since his 2012 return. She’d run roughshod over the entire division, destroying anyone in her path.

She’d be the missing piece that the division could really use right now.

4. She Would Be a Huge Draw

WWE have done a terrible job of making their superstars into pop culture crossover stars. The only guys who still hold a degree of popularity outside the wrestling fandom are John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar and the Undertaker. Everyone else is lacking in the crossover appeal department, thanks to WWE’s abysmal efforts in giving the wrestlers the freedom to create their own characters and get over with the fans by themselves.

Ronda Rousey doesn’t have this problem. She has been booked as a true badass, and would enter WWE with nary a blemish. She has cross-cultural popularity, owing from her recognition as a dangerous fighter. Even with her high-profile loss, most people know who Ronda Rousey is when they hear her name. She has a big following, and attracts attention wherever she goes. That would be very helpful for WWE.

Just as Lesnar did when he returned to WWE, you could expect Ronda to bring in more viewers should she debut with WWE. Even if she stayed for only a short time, there would be enough curiosity from people to see if she’d transition from MMA to wrestling successfully. That would help WWE in a big way, especially with their current ratings woes.

3. She’d Adapt to WWE Easily

Rousey entering WWE would be the opposite of CM Punk training to debut in UFC. Ronda wouldn’t have to worry so much about getting knocked out in less than a minute. Nor would she have to be concerned about shoot fights possible ruining her untarnished reputation. Instead, she’d learn about the scripted world of pro wrestling, wherein she’d fit in without any trouble.

It’s not likely that learning how to wrestle would take a long time for Ronda Rousey. She could put on a very good match with a limited move-set of take-downs, chain grappling, and submission holds.

Moreover, with her reputation for legitimate strikes, there would be an added sense of danger whenever she was to wrestle. Much like with Brock Lesnar, people would watch with greater interest to see if she’d hurt someone for real. Say what you want about the state of wrestling in 2016, many people still watch it to see crazy moves and a sense of real danger.

This is what Rousey would bring to the table. Something that no woman in WWE right now can offer. Rousey is the only person who’d be able to add an extra layer of realism and excitement that’s otherwise absent from WWE’s women’s division.

2. There’s a Ready-Made Feud for Rousey vs. Stephanie McMahon

Ronda Rousey first entered a WWE ring at WrestleMania 31. She had a confrontation with Stephanie McMahon that ended with Vince’s daughter in an armbar. When Rousey did this, the audience became unglued. It was a sign of hope that Ronda would appear later in a wrestling ring again, only this time as a wrestler.

That never happened, and Rousey wasn’t able to attend a subsequent WWE event due to her own schedule. But now, it looks like her MMA career is over. That would free her from other commitments and would allow her to finish what she started with Stephanie.

It’s no big secret that the Stephanie McMahon character is in desperate need of comeuppance. She has been untouchable since 2013. She verbally berates everyone on the roster, both those opposed to her and her own allies. She hogs up more screen time than most of the top wrestlers. She even places herself in all the charity videos while expecting the audience to boo her. RAW has become the Stephanie McMahon show, and fans want her to either get what she deserves or leave.

Since the second option is not likely, the best course of action is for someone to demolish Stephanie McMahon. That someone should be Ronda Rousey. Rousey could come in as the conquering hero, come to punish the wicked Stephanie for all the harm she’s done to the show she loves as a fan.

This stuff pretty much writes itself. It’s a guaranteed money-making feud in WWE.

1. It Would Help The Image of the Women’s Revolution

WWE wants the whole world to think it’s all about treating men and women equally. That is why the women main-evented HIAC and took part in a match that used to be the sole domain of the male wrestlers. That is why they’re promoting the women as top draws for everyone just as much as the top male heroes like Cena. And that is why they should sign someone who kicks ass just like a male MMA fighter.

Rousey would be a stark contrast to how WWE builds its female characters. All of them are expected to cut good promos, be role models for young girls, be cheerful (or at self-confident through their words and actions) and generally be ‘superstars’. Rousey would be the take-no-prisoners fighting machine that hurts people whenever they piss her off.

The company needs to show that women come in all shapes and sizes, and have different temperaments. Sometimes a woman can be a no-nonsense, soft-spoken fighter that loves violence.

Rousey would do wonders in elevating the women’s division to a whole new level. It would give the impression that top athletes go to that division, and that it’s a challenge for her to conquer it. by simply having a well-known fighter in the division, you’re guaranteed to have many more people tuning in to watch her.
