WTA event in Connecticut changes name, adds new sponsor

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:37 p.m. ET

Connecticut's stop on the women's tennis tour has changed its name after landing a new sponsor.

What had been the New Haven Open became the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies on Tuesday.

Tournament director Anne Worcester says the new name is designed to broaden the event's overall appeal and reflect the state's investment. The state last year agreed to spend $618,000 to buy the sanctioning rights to the tournament and keep it from moving to North Carolina.

UTC, which is based in Hartford, agreed to become the presenting sponsor for the WTA event. The last title sponsor was Pilot Pen, which ended its relationship in 2010.

This year's tournament is scheduled Aug. 15-23 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
