Top-seeded Kerber beats Erakovic in Nuremberg

NUREMBERG, Germany -- Top-seeded Angelique Kerber broke Marina Erakovic of New Zealand at the start of each set and won 6-4, 6-2 in her Nuremberg Cup opener on Tuesday.

Second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard cruised into the second round of the Nuremberg Cup by beating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-3 on Monday.

Fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina also advanced, beating Iveta Melzer 7-5, 6-4 in a much closer match.

However, fifth-seeded Yvonne Meusburger was eliminated after losing 6-3, 6-4 to Karolina Pliskova.

Sixth-seeded Kurumi Nara of Japan crashed out in the second round, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

Seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia needed three sets to overcome Julia Glushko 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 and eighth-seeded Annika Beck cruised past Jana Cepelova 6-2, 6-3.

Karin Knapp defeated Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-2 to also advance.
