Teenager Fritz, del Potro earn wild cards at Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) American teenager Taylor Fritz, former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro and Australian Open quarterfinalist Zhang Shuai of China have been awarded wild cards into the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open next month.
Tournament officials announced the wild cards Thursday.
Fritz reached the final at Memphis last week, becoming at 18 the youngest American since 1989 to reach an ATP Tour final. The 18-year-old from Southern California received a wild card into the qualifying draw at last year's desert tournament.
Del Potro recently returned to the tour after being out most of the last two years. He was the runner-up at Indian Wells in 2013.
Zhang posted wins against four top-50 players during her run to the Australian Open quarters.
Three men's and seven women's wild cards will be awarded in the coming weeks. The tournament runs March 7-20.
