Stosur beats Mladenovic to reach 3rd round
Ninth-seeded Sam Stosur beat Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3 at the French Open on Thursday to set up a third-round match with former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.
The former U.S. Open champion saved the only break point she faced, hit 26 winners and broke Mladenovic's serve once in each set.
''Overall very pleased with the way I played,'' Stosur said. ''I thought the first set had good quality from both of us.''
Three years ago, Stosur beat Jankovic in the semifinals to reach the French Open final.
''I actually can't remember the first match I won on clay, but it took me five years to win a match here at Roland Garros through juniors and qualies and everything else,'' Stosur said. ''It was a slow process.''
The 18th-seeded Jankovic, a three-time semifinalist at Roland Garros, beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain 6-3, 6-0 earlier.
She leads Stosur 6-2 overall with one victory each on clay.
''It's always tough playing Jelena. We played about four or five weeks ago in Stuttgart (on clay) and she beat me there,'' Stosur said. ''I have to be ready to work hard.''
