Reports: Martinez to take charge of Spain's Davis Cup team
MADRID (AP) Spanish media reports say former Wimbledon winner Conchita Martinez will be appointed temporary captain of Spain's Davis Cup team as a replacement for the fired Gala Leon.
The Spanish tennis federation was expected to announce the decision on Monday.
Martinez is already captain of Spain's Fed Cup team and she would take over a team that has been in discord lately. Rafael Nadal criticized Leon, Spain's first female Davis Cup captain, last year for fueling what he called a ''false'' debate over sexism after his uncle and coach Toni said the federation should have hired someone with a background in men's tennis.
Gala was fired Friday by the newly appointed president of Spain's tennis federation, Fernando Fernandez-Ladreda Aguirre, in a move to quell unrest among players.
Spain plays Russia later this month for a spot in the World Group playoffs.
