Rafael Nadal is one of the greatest men’s singles players on the tour. The “King of Clay” returns for what must be a redemptive 2017 season.

Rafael Nadal is looking to makeup for what was an odd 2016 season.

The Spanish tennis player missed several tournaments midseason and cut his season short in mid October to recover in preparation for 2017.

Nadal must redeem himself in 2017.

While he did earn 2 ATP singles titles in 2016, Nadal struggled to win when it mattered most. The inconsistency and lingering health problems has tennis fans wondering whether or not he can return to top form.

Nadal is ranked No. 9 in the world.

His wins at Barcelona and Monte Carlo, along with an overall singles record of 39-14 gave him what ended up as a respectable season. He failed to advance deep into any major tournament and did not play at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships.

The 30-year-old Nadal is a former world No. 1 and largely considered one of the greatest men’s singles players in history. He has 14 Grand Slam singles titles, including 9 at the French Open. His success at Roland Garros has earned him the nickname “King of Clay.”

Nadal opens his 2017 season at Brisbane.

Having added new members to his coaching staff, the Spaniard is eager to make his mark this coming season. If he can remain healthy, Nadal should win several ATP singles titles in 2017. He must also be considered a favorite at the 2017 French Open.

This coming season is not just a chance to add to his trophy case, it is a chance to prove he is still deserving of a No. 1 ranking. Andy Murray overtook Novak Djokovic for the top ranking at the end of 2016. Nadal must contend with a surging Murray and Djokovic, who will also be eager to redeem his late 2016 slide from the top.
