Philippoussis won't play at Indian Wells

Published Mar. 1, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Mark Philippoussis of Australia has withdrawn his request for a wild card into qualifying for the BNP Paribas Open.

He won the 1999 tournament in Indian Wells and was set to receive a wild card into qualifying for the March 7-20 event featuring the men's and women's professional tours.

Tournament officials said Tuesday that the 34-year-old Australian, runner-up in the 1998 U.S. Open and at Wimbledon in 2003, will be competing in a senior event in Zurich, Switzerland, as part of his comeback, making him unavailable for Indian Wells.
