Djokovic’s first Australian Open title came in 2008.

He defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 4 sets to become the first Serbian player to win the Australian Open. The title was a sign of what the tennis world could expect from Nole.

    Djokovic’s 5 other titles at the tournament came in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016.

Both of his previous two titles have been victories over now world No. 1 Andy Murray. The career rivalry between Djokovic and Murray is one of the highlights in tennis today. At the Australian Open, Djokovic has the career edge.

The 2017 iteration of the major tournament will be something that all of tennis will be watching. Murray, now world No. 1 can make a move at the first Grand Slam of the year. Djokovic, however, will look to defend his title and begin his rise to the top position yet again.

In 2015, Djokovic defeated Murray in 4 sets, whereas last season, Nole took down Murray in straight sets to win his 6th Australian Open title.

In recent weeks, Djokovic announced the split between him and coach Boris Becker. The change is significant to kick off the 2017 ATP World Tour. Becker has been a critical part of Nole’s success in Australia and the upcoming season will prove whether or not Djokovic can make the necessary adjustments to remain on top at the major tournament.
