Nalbandian escapes further punishment
Argentine tennis star David Nalbandian will not face any further discipline from the ATP Tour following his disqualification from the Queen's club last week for injuring a linesman when he kicked an advertising board.
Nalbandian was fined and docked 150 ranking points following the incident but was also facing a lengthy ban.
"After a review of the incident, the ATP determined that although David's actions were unacceptable and under ATP rules warranted an automatic default, the injury to the linesman was unintentional," the Tour said in a statement Sunday.
"As such, it was decided that the sanctions already levied against David are sufficient in this case."
Nalbandian won the first set of the AEGON Championships final against Croatia's Marin Cilic in a tiebreak but reacted angrily after being broken for the second time in the second set, kicking the board in front of line judge Andrew McDougall's chair.
The board smacked into McDougall's shin and a caused a bloody gash. Referee Fergus Murphy awarded Cilic the match, and the championship, by disqualifying the 30-year-old for "unsportsmanlike behavior." The score was 7-6 (7-3), 3-4 in Nalbandian's favor at the time of his dismissal.
The ATP later confirmed Nalbandian's disqualification resulted in a €10,000 (US$12,500) fine and the automatic forfeiture of his £36,500 (US$57,100) in tournament prize money.
Nalbandian will face Serbian eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday.
