Seventh-seeded Petra Kvitova was pushed to a third set before advancing to the second round of the U.S. Open.

The 2011 Wimbledon champ beat Misaki Doi of Japan 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 Tuesday in a rare matchup of two lefties. Kvitova had 29 winners but the same number of unforced errors on a windy day.

The 92nd-ranked Doi fell to 0-4 against top-10 opponents.

Kvitova has reached at least the semifinals at the other three major tournaments but has never advanced past the fourth round at the U.S. Open.
