Martina Hingis, no stranger to controversy, is embroiled in another mess. This time, the estranged husband of the tennis star claims she is a serial adulterer, according to a Swiss newspaper.
The timing of the allegations from her husband, Thibault Hutin, a 26-year-old French equestrian, is awkward for Hingis. She just helped the Washington Kastles of World Team Tennis make history and is being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Rhode Island this weekend.
Hingis won three consecutive Australian Opens, one Wimbledon title and one US Open between 1997 and 1999, and was the world’s No. 1 for 209 weeks.
After an early retirement due to injury in 2002 at the age of 22, Hingis made a return to tennis in 2006, but quit a year later after testing positive for cocaine in a routine drug test.
Hutin told SonntagsBlick: “A year after the wedding [. . .] we were supposed to meet in New York and I wanted to give her a surprise.
“Upon arriving at the hotel room it was me that was surprised, because Martina was not alone.”
Hutin added “late last year I found out that she had cheated on me again.”
Hutin’s feelings suffered another dent when Hingis told Swiss magazine Schweizer Illustrierten on Monday that the pair had been separated since the beginning of the year.
“Martina has a very personal conception of morality,” Hutin told the Swiss newspaper. "She has always been like that; I think she has always been unfaithful to her boyfriends.”
Hingis is now reported to be in a relationship with David Tosas Ros, a Spanish sports management executive, according to the report.
“They shared the hotel room there and they paraded themselves in public in the Bois de Boulogne,” Hutin said. “There are even pictures of them. You can imagine how painful it was for me.”
Hingis did not respond to Hutin’s claims. She was also in the news this week as being part of the World Team Tennis Washington Kastles, who won a record 34 straight matches before finally losing Wednesday.
