EL tennis vets off to Turkey
By
TWO Border veteran tennis players, Joan Sephton and Marie
van Rensburg, leave tomorrow for the
International
Tennis
Federation (
ITF) World Team Event and World
Championships in Turkey. They will be representing South Africa in
the 70+ and 65+ age groups respectively.
This will be Van Rensburg's third trip. She has been to
Turkey and Philadelphia, while Sephton travelled to Turkey four
years ago.
Sephton spearheads the 70+ team with Jenny Lawer (Gauteng
North), Reiko Murase (Gauteng Central) and Kathy Nevay (Gauteng
East). Her top position in the team follows a year in which she has
achieved excellent results.
She was runner-up to Janine Lieffrig in the national
championships, won the Free State title and finished at the top of
her age- group in the East Cape championships.
Despite being the current 70+ world champion, Lieffrig of
Free State was not considered for the team as she had not fulfilled
the criteria of playing in three tournaments this year.
Van Rensburg succumbed to Maeve Samuels of Western Province
in the singles quarter-finals of the SA Championships and finished
third overall in the Free State tournament.
She won the combined 65/70+ age group in East London beating
Sephton in a protracted final.
Captained by Samuels, the third member of the 65+ team is
Elmarie Lategan of SWD.
