Davis Cup: Marin Cilic pulls Croatia even with US
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Marin Cilic set up a deciding fifth match in Croatia's Davis Cup quarterfinal against the United States, beating John Isner 7-6 (11-9), 6-3, 6-4 in the first reverse singles match Sunday to even the tie at 2-2.
Jack Sock faced Croatia's Borna Coric in the final match on the Tualatin Hills hard courts.
The U.S.-Croatia winner will advance to the World Group semifinals against France on Sept. 16-18. The U.S.-Croatia winner will host.
Cilic, playing his third match in three days, overcame a hot-serving Isner in the first set to win in a tiebreaker. Isner won 31 of his 35 service points, but dropped three during the tiebreaker as Cilic won 11-9.
Cilic finally broke Isner's serve during the eighth game of the second set, leading to a 6-3 win and a two-set lead.
Unlike Friday's first singles match, when Cilic lost after leading Sock by two sets, the world's No. 12-ranked player finished off Isner by breaking him in the ninth game to pull out a 6-4 win.
The U.S. is seeking its first semifinals appearance since 2012, Croatia since 2009.
