A woman has been appointed to head the Lawn Tennis Association for the first time in the British organization's 125-year history.

Cathie Sabin assumed the presidency at the LTA's annual general meeting on Wednesday.

The 66-year-old former teacher says she doubted if a woman would get the chance to be the LTA's figurehead.

Sabin added that ''when we are trying to raise the profile of women and girls in sport, not just tennis, I think it's a great opportunity.''
