Bencic defeats injured Halep to win Rogers Cup

TORONTO -- Belinda Bencic won the Rogers Cup on Sunday, following her upset of Serena Williams with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 3-0 victory over an ailing Simona Halep.
Halep was hampered by a left leg injury and heat exhaustion and stopped in the third set.
Bencic is an 18-year-old Swiss who is ranked 20th. She won for the second time on the WTA Tour.

Her victory over the second-seeded Romanian capped a week of upsets. She beat four of the top five seeds, including the top-ranked Williams in the semifinals Saturday.
This was the first time Bencic was playing in a top-level final. She earned $456,000 for the victory.
