German qualifier Mona Barthel upset second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 6-4 Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals of the Hobart International, a tuneup for next week's Australian Open.

Defending champion Jarmila Gajdosova defeated Australian Fed Cup teammate Anastasia Rodionova 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 and will play Barthel on Thursday.

In another second-round match, sixth-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel beat Sacha Jones of Australia 7-6 (7) 6-4 in a rain-delayed match that ended nearly eight hours after it started.

Jones had four set points in the first set, but gave away one of them with a mis-hit off an easy smash that went into the stadium parking lot.

''I was just looking saying thanks to God and that's it,'' Peer said. ''That's the best I could do. It's a tough point to miss actually.''

Peer, who reached the Hobart final in 2010, will meet Russian Anna Chakvetadze in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium takes on Simona Halep and fellow Romanian Sorana Cirstea plays Angelique Kerber of Germany in the other final-eight pairings.
