Second seed and defending champion Marcos Baghdatis withdrew Monday from the Medibank International Sydney – a warmup event for the Australian Open – because of a groin injury he has carried for four days, The (Sydney, Australia) Daily Telegraph reported.

The world No. 21 said it was a difficult decision to make having said on Sunday he had no real concerns about his fitness.

“It’s been four days and it feels a little better, but I spoke to my team [Monday] morning and we decided not to risk it," Baghdatis said.

The 25-year-old Cypriot said he still expected to be 100 percent fit for the first round of the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 17 at Melbourne Park.
