The Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo could be held for the last time in September after being replaced by a new event in China on the WTA's 2014 calendar.

The WTA announced the Pan Pacific Open will be replaced by a tournament in Wuhan, China, the hometown of world No. 6 Li Na.

Organizers of Japan's premier women's tennis tournament say they are negotiating with the WTA to stage the event at a lower category. The Pan Pacific offers $2 million in prize money.

Past winners of the 30-year-old event have included Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova.
