1st loss for Odesnik in his comeback

Published Jan. 14, 2011 10:50 p.m. ET

Wayne Odesnik has lost in his first tournament since serving a one-year suspension by the International Tennis Federation.

Odesnik, who lives in nearby Weston, was beaten in the quarterfinals Friday by Luka Gregorc of Slovenia, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

The ITF suspended Odesnik after customs officers discovered the performance-enhancing substance human growth hormone in his baggage when he arrived in Australia for a tournament a year ago. Stripped of his ranking, the former top-100 player began his comeback this week at the Futures level, the lowest rung on the U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit.

Odesnik, who won two matches before losing to Gregorc, plans to play more Futures tournaments in the coming weeks.
