Worker dies at World Cup stadium

A construction worker died at the stadium in Brazil where England are due to play the opening match of their World Cup campaign against Italy.

Marcleudo de Melo Ferreira, 22, died in hospital after falling 115 feet from the roof of the Arena Amazonia in Manaus when a cable broke. The jungle city stadium is behind schedule, with work under way day and night to ensure its completion by the end of the year.

But a third construction death at tournament stadia in less than a month has raised concerns about worker safety as FIFA's deadline looms. Two workers were killed a fortnight ago when a crane collapsed at a stadium in Sao Paulo - where England play their second game against Uruguay.

A message of condolence posted on FIFA president Sepp Blatter's Twitter page read: "Very sad to learn that a young construction worker died at Arena Amazonia in Manaus earlier today. My deepest sympathies go to his family."
