Richie Williams has replaced Wilmer Cabrera as coach of the U.S. Under-17 soccer team.

Williams, who made 20 appearances for the U.S. national team from 1998-02, was hired Tuesday by the U.S. Soccer Federation and will oversee the under-17 residency program in Bradenton, Fla.

He had been coach of the under-18 team and was the Mid-Atlantic technical advisor for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

He spent five seasons as an assistant coach with Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls.
