Why can't Bayern Munich ever win the Bundesliga title at home?
Bayern Munich can't seem to win a Bundesliga title at home. When they won the league in 2013 and 2014, they did so away from the Allianz Arena. Last season, it was a result in another match that clinched them the trophy. But Saturday was supposed to be the end of that streak - Borussia Monchengladbach were visiting Munich and Pep Guardiola's boys could become champions with a win.
And Bayern could only manage draw. No title. Not at home.
Bayern shouldn't have much trouble clinching the title next week. They're playing Ingolstadt, but that match is away from the Allianz Arena. They will win and celebrate, but not in front of 70,000 adoring red-clad fans.
Do the celebrations and clinching at home really matter? No. But it is a nice cherry on top and makes for some memorable scenes. For a team about to win a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title, you would think that just once they could get to party in front of their fans.
The players would keep looking up at the scoreboard. They'd see the fourth official put up stoppage time. They'd count down, whistling at the referee to blow for full time. And finally he would, only to have his whistle drowned out by the cheering fans, who would begin the singing and dancing. The players would do the same and the sea of red would be a sight to behold.
Instead, it's smiles and hugs from the players, with the corner of the stadium cheering on from the away section. The home fans politely clap and everyone goes home.
Bayern Munich didn't have plans to have a massive celebration at the Allianz on Saturday, even if they did clinch the league. They were going to save it for the last day of the season, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't have been a party in the stands if Bayern had clinched on Saturday.
When you're Bayern Munich, you can afford to think about where you clinch a title. It's a luxury of having no doubt that the Bundesliga will be yours. They'll have a Champions League semifinal at the Allianz on Wednesday, so they won't be short on fun in Munich, and that Bundesliga title celebration was always planned for the season's final day.
But still, can the soccer gods help Bayern out just once and let them win the league at home? It's been four years. One in four isn't too much to ask. Then again, the soccer gods generally bend at Bayern's will for pretty much everything else, so this isn't a bad sacrifice to make.
