West Ham United-Manchester City Preview
Manchester City's first taste of European action this season ended disappointingly in midweek, and they will be anxious to bounce back in style against West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
City (5-0-0) have made a perfect start to their Premier League campaign with five straight victories and lead the early season table by four points. Manuel Pellegrini's side have scored 11 times and have yet to concede in domestic league action.
The Citizens maintained their 100 percent record with 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace last weekend, but it took a 90th-minute winner from Nigerian teenager Kelechi Iheanacho to secure maximum points.
Pellegrini and his players were brought down to earth with a bump on Tuesday night when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Juventus in a Champions League Group D match.
After a goalless first half, City took the lead on 57 minutes when Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini headed into his own net under pressure from Vincent Kompany. Mario Mandzukic equalised on 70 minutes before Alvaro Morata hit the winner for the Serie A champions nine minutes from time.
Despite the result against Juventus, who were runners-up to Barcelona in last season's Champions League, City boss Pellegrini was not too downbeat after the match.
"We played against a strong team, with not too many options, but I think we controlled the game and really I don't remember Juventus creating important chances," Pellegrini told his club website. "We are just starting, it's a game you never want to lose here at home because they are three very important points but the group is just starting.
"We have 15 points more to play for so it depends on the way we play the next game. It's not the best way to start losing at home against a strong team but it doesn't mean we won't qualify, we have to play against Juventus there and another four games, and we'll see which team has the most points at the end."
The Hammers (3-0-2) have started with three wins and two losses under new manager Slaven Bilic and are fifth in the table on nine points.
The Londoners claimed a stunning 3-0 victory at Liverpool before the international break and made it back-to-back league wins with a 2-0 home win against Newcastle United last weekend. Dimitri Payet, a summer signing from French club Marseille, scored both goals against the Magpies.
Captain Mark Noble is confident West Ham can build on their two recent league victories at the Etihad Stadium.
"We just need to keep working hard again this week," Noble told his club's website. "We cannot think we have done it and it gives us a bit of leeway going into the Manchester City game and try and get a result.
"City are by the far the best team and they have not conceded a goal yet. That would be a major feat if we could score. Everyone knows how good they are and their players seem to be back on it. We have also got a good team and when you look at our first three away games, to already have six points is exciting."
Kompany suffered a calf injury against Juventus, but the City captain is expected to feature against the Hammers.
West Ham goalkeeper Adrian is now available for selection after serving a three-match ban.
Both sides won at home against each other last season. West Ham beat City 2-1 at Upton Park in October with Morgan Amalfitano and Diafra Sakho netting for the Hammers. David Silva scored with 13 minutes left but the Citizens couldn't find a second. City won 2-0 at the Etihad in April as James Collins scored an own goal and Sergio Aguero netted in the first half.
The Citizens have won six of their last seven meetings with the Hammers across all competitions, outscoring them 23-4 in those contests.
Overall, Manchester City have won 15 of the 28 Premier League meetings with West Ham, with eight defeats and five draws.
The Hammers have lost their last seven visits to the Etihad Stadium in all competitions, being outscored 20-3.
