Wenger defends misfiring Arshavin

Arshavin, 29, has endured an indifferent campaign and found himself questioning his own talent after some disappointing recent displays. Wenger, however, is in no doubt the midfielder, signed in a £15million deal from Zenit St Petersburg in the winter of 2009, will soon be firing on all cylinders again. "I am not concerned about Andrey's form because if you look at the number of games he played, Andrey is too harsh with himself," said Wenger, who appears set to hand the Russian another chance to impress in Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round clash with npower League One side Huddersfield at the Emirates Stadium. "If you look at the best passers in the Premier League, he is still up there. "Even the other night he has given two assists against Ipswich. "Andrey is not as consistent technically as we are used to because it is a lack of confidence and he is very harsh on himself." Wenger added: "Sometimes we forget how good we are and more times when we are conscious of it. "Andrey is at the moment in that position, so we have to remind him how good he is." Wenger, meanwhile, has challenged fit-again Manuel Almunia to regain the goalkeeper's jersey. The Spaniard, 33, has not played since the end of September when he injured his elbow saving a penalty in the home defeat against West Brom, and then suffered an ankle problem just as he was close to a return. In his absence, first Lukasz Fabianski, who has since suffered a shoulder injury, and then Wojciech Szczesny impressed when stepping in between the posts. Almunia has had offers to leave this month, from both Spain and Turkey, but could yet stay and battle to win his place back. "At the moment, Szczesny has played every game so in this position at the moment he is the number one," Wenger confirmed. "It is down to the others to challenge him. "The fact that he has been chosen to play the games means that at the moment he is the guy who plays." Wenger added: "Almunia has been injured for a long time and in a situation like that you feel jobless, so of course I feel for him. "We have four 'keepers - Szczesny, Fabianski, Almunia and (Vito) Mannone. All four are good. You can always look and feel sorry for the three (left out)." With the return of Sebastien Squillaci, and Thomas Vermaelen expected to return in around six weeks, Wenger believes there is enough cover in the centre of defence. "We have looked and have not found any reasonable solutions," the Arsenal boss said. "If we buy another one, first, we have to buy him for four years and then we have to pay him for four years and then we will have five centre-backs, then (Alex) Song is six. "What do six centre-backs do? Watch the games in the stands because they don't play." Wenger, though, indicated he would like to bring in temporary cover with Arsenal still involved in all four competitions. "If we can get a defender on loan until the end of the season, it is an ideal solution for us," he said. "It would not get us into a position where we have to pay five defenders for four years and it would cover the season. "If we find that opportunity we will do it. "We believe in the quality of the defenders we have, but we are a bit short on numbers."
