Watch: Christen Press's hat trick leads USWNT in rout of Romania
A short drive from where they bested the competition in college, Christen Press and Alex Morgan led the U.S. women's national team to an 8-1 rout of Romania Thursday night.
Press, a former Stanford star, scored a hat trick in the one-sided friendly at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California, while Morgan, a former University of California standout, added a pair of goals in the USA's penultimate match of the year. The two sides will play again on Nov. 13 at StubHub Center in Carson, California, to round out the 2016 calendar.
Tobin Heath and Morgan Brian also scored, while a stoppage-time own goal caused by Heath rounded out the tallies for the United States.
Press started the scoring in the eighth minute off a layoff from Crystal Dunn.
Heath made it 2-0 two minutes later on a sensational chip from a tight angle after being played through by Press.
Brian made it 3-0 in the 25th minute, flashing deep into the box to head home Andi Sullivan's free kick from the end line.
After Romania pulled one back through Laura Rus, Press scored twice more before halftime to complete her hat trick and send the U.S. to the locker room with a 5-1 lead.
The second half belonged to Morgan, who entered as a substitute and scored in the 52nd and 75th minutes, on assists from Dunn and Lindsey Horan, respectively.
Also of note for the USA is Jessica McDonald earning her first cap. She replaced Lynn Williams at halftime.
