Villarreal tie up deal for Atletico Madrid stopper Sergio Asenjo
Villarreal have agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo from Primera Division champions Atletico Madrid on a permanent basis.
The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at El Madrigal, making 35 appearances, and this deal ties him to the Yellow Submarine for another five years.
A delighted Asenjo said on the Villarreal website: "I've said almost since I arrived here that Villarreal were my only choice. I couldn't be happier. I can only feel pleased because everything has turned out well and I can start a new chapter of my career here.
"The club have made an effort to keep me here, which I'm very grateful for, and now I have to return this confidence which they've placed in me."
Asenjo started his career at Real Valladolid before joining Atletico for a reported five millions euros in 2009.
Injuries and competition in the form of David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois have limited the amount of playing time Asenjo has had at Atletico and he spent time out on loan at Malaga before his stint at Villarreal last term.
