Villarreal has sacked coach Ernesto Valverde following the team's 2-0 home defeat to Osasuna in the Spanish league.

The club said on its Web site Sunday that a replacement coach is yet to be announced.

Valverde joined Villarreal in the summer of 2009 after guiding Olympiakos to the Greek league and cup double. A former Barcelona player, he has also coached Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao.

A disastrous start to the season saw Villarreal mired in the relegation zone. The team has since climbed the league standings although it has struggled to rise beyond the middle of the table. It is currently in 10th position on 26 points.
