Vieira ready to call time on France career
Veteran midfielder Patrick Vieira is ready to end his international career after being left out of France's disastrous World Cup squad.
The 34-year-old Manchester City player was snubbed by coach Raymond Domenech, whose team failed miserably at the tournament, being eliminated in the group stages and upsetting French fans with their behavior.
Vieira has played 107 times for France, winning the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship two years later. But he has been hampered by niggling injuries since playing in the World Cup final four years ago, which France lost to Italy.
"Honestly, I am no longer available for selection," Vieira told Canal Plus television. "It would not be reasonable."
The French camp was riddled with bickering and tensions. Nicolas Anelka was sent home for insulting Domenech, and the players went on strike at training over it, prompting outrage back home.
"I was as disappointed as everyone else," Vieira said. "It hurts to see the France team like that after so many beautiful years."
