Valencia's Maduro out 4 months with ankle injury

Valencia says defender Hedwiges Maduro will be sidelined for four months after injuring ankle ligaments while on international duty with the Netherlands.

The 26-year-old defender seems certain to miss the rest of Valencia's Champions League group stage games against Chelsea, Genk and Bayer Leverkusen. It is third in Group E.

Valencia doctor Jorge Candel says Maduro underwent surgery in the Netherlands, which stabilized the injury. Candel says the recovery time will be ''longer than we thought'' because the injury was ''complicated.''

Maduro did not feature in either of the Netherlands' Euro 2012 qualifying matches.
