Valencia relied on a Michel goal seven minutes after halftime to defeat Everton 1-0 and secure fifth place in the Guinness International Champions Cup on Tuesday night.
Michel handed Los Che the result it deserved on the balance of play with a neat piece of skill on the edge of the penalty area. The halftime substitute corralled a pass from the left side and then lashed home inside the near post to decide a match where one goal always looked likely to settle the outcome.
Miroslav Djukic's side enjoyed enough possession to snatch a second at some stage, but it lacked the center-forward play provided by new Spurs striker Roberto Soldado. Jonas and Roberto Ibañez fluttered around the penalty area and procured chances here and there, but Joel Robles blocked two Ibañez attempts to keep his side within striking distance.
Everton posed a modest threat on the break without truly threatening to open its account. Victor Anichebe and Ross Barkley both took turns trying to lead the counter without receiving the necessary support. Second-half substitute Kevin Mirallas presented some concerns with his direct running and his service from set pieces, but Roberto Martinez's side could not engineer an equalizer and ultimately concluded its American tour with a defeat in Sun Life Stadium.
