His Dutch club, AZ Alkmaar, said on its website Friday that Johannsson will be out 6-8 weeks.

Johannsson came on after Jozy Altidore was injured in the Americans' World Cup opener but didn't make much of an impact. He didn't play in their last three games.

The 23-year-old Johannsson scored 26 goals last season. Born in Alabama to Icelandic parents, Johannsson moved to Iceland when he was 3 and appeared in eight qualifiers for the country for the 2012 European Under-21 Championship. He asked FIFA to change his affiliation to the U.S. last summer.

The Americans were eliminated by Belgium on Tuesday.
