US forward Sydney Leroux needs ankle surgery
CHICAGO (AP) U.S. women's national team forward Sydney Leroux will have surgery on her right ankle and will be sidelined for at much as three months.
U.S. Soccer announced Friday that Leroux, who plays for the NWSL's Western New York Flash, will undergo surgery next week in Kansas City, Missouri.
Leroux was on the U.S. team that won the World Cup earlier this month in Canada. The Americans beat Japan 5-2 in the final.
U.S. Soccer said Leroux had an accessory bone in her ankle that has been causing pain over the last six months. It became more irritated during the course of the monthlong World Cup tournament.
She'll likely miss several matches of the team's 10-city victory tour, which starts on Aug. 16 with a match against Costa Rica in Pittsburgh.
