Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Fernandez has joined Qatar's Al Rayyan from MLS side Chicago Fire on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The Qatar Stars League said Sunday on its website that the 27-year-old Fernandez has already trained with his new club ahead of its game against Umm Salal on Monday.
Fernandez called the move ''a big new challenge.''
Fernandez, who has 12 caps for his country, is expected to play in Uruguay's friendly against Spain next month in Qatar.

Al Rayyan secretary general Ali Salem Afifa said he hoped Fernandez could help the club qualify for a spot in the Asian Champions League.
Al Rayyan is third in the 12-team league.
