England have risen one place to 11th in the latest FIFA rankings, while the United States is now just two spots behind in 13th.
The Three Lions can partially attribute their rise to a 1-0 victory over Denmark last month, while a 2-2 draw with the USA has put Mexico in 19th.
Portugal rises to 3rd in the rankings, with fourth-ranked Colombia now the leader in terms of South American nations.
Radamel Falcao's Colombians have overtaken Argentina, who have dropped three places and are now joint with World Cup host and bitter rivals Brazil in 6th.
World and European champion Spain remains top, ahead of Germany in 2nd. Uruguay completes the top 5.
Though no top team played last month, the rankings movement is caused by earlier results in a four-year cycle of matches having less value.
Switzerland, Italy and Greece, rising three places, complete the top 10.
Ivory Coast, at No. 21, leads the African nations. Iran is the highest-ranked Asian confederation team at No. 37.
Australia at No. 59 will enter the World Cup as the lowest-ranked team.
