Former South Africa coach Joel Santana is leaving Brazilian club Botafogo, saying he is unhappy with the attitude of some fans who jeered him.

Some fans yelled slurs at Santana and applauded the referee for ejecting him after a verbal confrontation in the team's 2-0 loss to rival Vasco da Gama on Sunday.

Santana said Tuesday that some fans tried to convince him to stay, but ''in the last few games, some people out of their mind wanted to attack me.''

Despite good results recently, he had been heavily criticized by some fans who were unhappy with how the team had been playing. He leaves with Botafogo in first place in Group B of the Rio Cup.
