Ukraine defeats Montenegro 4-0 in WCup qualifier

Ukraine beat Montenegro 4-0 in World Cup qualifying Friday, putting itself in contention for a spot in Brazil and throwing Group H wide open.

The victory puts Ukraine three points behind group leader Montenegro with a game in hand, and also did second-place England a big favor. England now controls its own fate again as it is two points behind Montenegro, also with a game in hand.

''Now everything is open in our group,'' Montenegro coach Branko Brnovic said. ''I am responsible for such a bad result because I had a bad assessment. ... We will seek victory in Poland, and I think we have a team capable to return.''

Denys Garmash scored first in the 52nd minute after goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic spilled a long-range shot from Andriy Yarmolenko out for a rebound.

Yevgen Konoplianka then took a perfect pass from Yarmolenko to double the lead in the 77th, before Artem Fedetski added the third from a tight angle in the 85th.

Substitute Roman Bezus netted a solo goal to cap the victory in injury time.

Montenegro had a few good chances to score as well. Mirko Vucinic served a perfect ball for Stevan Jovetic in 18th minute, but he squanedered the chance. Four minutes later, Elsad Zverotic set up Vucinic who hit the woodwork. .

Yarmolenko missed a chance in the 34th afte ra one-two with Roman Zozulia in the area, as his weak shot was easily saved by Bozovic.

Jovetic then had to be substituted in the 43rd with an injury and was replaced by Dejan Damjanovic.
