UEFA has opened disciplinary cases against Marseille and Manchester United because of their fans' behavior at a Champions League match on Wednesday.

UEFA says it is investigating reports that Marseille fans shone a laser pen at Nani to distract the United winger at Stade Velodrome in the first leg of the round of 16 match.

Three years ago, UEFA fined French champion Lyon ?3,200 (then $5,000) for ''incidents of an unsporting nature'' when its fans aimed a laser beam at Cristiano Ronaldo, who then played for United.

UEFA is also studying reports that United fans broke competition rules by lighting flares in the stadium during the match, which ended 0-0.
