Twente, Utrecht reach Dutch Cup semis
FC Twente beat PSV Eindhoven 7-6 after a penalty shootout Wednesday to reach the Dutch Cup semifinals, while FC Utrecht also advanced by beating Groningen 3-2.
After the match ended 1-1, Dwight Tiendalli scored the decisive penalty for Twente after veteran goalkeeper Sander Boschker had saved PSV captain Orlando Engalaar's kick.
Tiendalli had come on for American defender Oguchi Onyewu, who was taken off midway through the first half with an apparent back injury.
Twente had taken the lead when midfielder Theo Janssen converted a 69th-minute penalty after Engelaar handled in the area. But Danny Koevermans equalized with a right-footed volley in the last minute of injury time.
"I wasn't lucky tonight," Engelaar said. "I have to move on. I thought we were the better team tonight so it hurts to lose like this."
Nanan Asare scored the winner for Utrecht in the 53rd minute, after Groningen had equalized twice.
On Tuesday, Ronald van Hout scored a hat trick as second-tier RKC Waalwijk routed amateur club Noordwijk 6-0 in their quarterfinal, while Ajax hosts NAC Breda on Thursday to complete the semifinal lineup.
