Twente turn to Adriaanse

Chairman Joop Munsterman confirmed the news on Monday following speculation linking the former AZ Alkmaar coach with the vacancy. Twente, who finished as runners-up to Ajax in the 2010/11 Eredivisie and lifted the KNVB Beker, saw former boss Michel Preud'homme resign last week to take charge of Saudia Arabia. Munsterman gave little away about Adriaanse's deal, other than the fact he would arrive in Enschede at the start of next week. "There's not much to say about it right now," Munsterman told AD Sportwereld. "We have agreed a deal in principle. Next week he will come to FC Twente and then things will become clearer." The chairman is confident Adriaanse is the right man for the job, however. "He's quirky and suits our style," he added. "We also want to build a team with players from our youth system. Co is renowned for being a coach who lets talent into his squad. He's shown that at all his previous clubs. "Our previous coaches, (Fred) Rutten, Preud'homme, (Steve) McClaren, were all very good. "Co wanted to join Twente and we wanted Co. He is fit as a fiddle and very ambitious. Our first goal is automatic qualification for Europe." Adriaanse has not coached in the Dutch top-flight since leaving AZ in 2005 - a club he led to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in the same year.
