FC Twente and Werder Bremen traded late goals to draw 1-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday to leave both sides still looking for a first win of the campaign.
Midfielder Theo Janssen scored in the 74th to give Twente the lead, blasting a close-range shot after a pass from Marc Janko. But former Twente forward Marko Arnautovic snatched an equalizer three minutes later, shaking off Wout Brama to volley past goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov.
"I think we did very well," Arnautovic said. "We had to stay focused for 90 minutes. I didn't want to celebrate the goal because of my respect for Twente fans."
Both sides have two points each from three games.
"We had a lot of chances to win. It's a pity we didn't make use of them," Brama said. "They have a strong team. You could see that."
Twente showed its attacking intent early, with captain Peter Wisgerhof trying his luck from the edge of the box in the fifth minute but goalkeeper Tim Wiese made a save.
Costa Rica forward Bryan Ruiz had two good chances to put Twente ahead in the first half, directing a long-range drive just wide in the 12th before sending another way beyond Wiese's goal.
Bremen goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz made a diving save to keep out Janko's close range strike in the 41st, while Bremen's Brazilian midfielder Wesley had his right-footed shot from 20 yards (meters) saved by Mihaylov in the 48th.
With Bremen enjoying superior ball possession in midfield, Twente slowed the pace and struggled to create scoring opportunities in the second half.
Aaron Hunt's combination with Arnautovic almost led to a Bremen goal in the 73rd but Mihaylov was first to get to the ball.
Janssen could have scored the winner in the 85th after a pass from Ruiz but Mielitz read his clever chip to make the save.
