Goals from Arda Turan and Gokhan Gonul led Turkey to a 2-0 win over Austria on Tuesday to rise above its opponent in Group A of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship.
Turkey went ahead in the 28th minute when Arda received the ball from a throw-in, dribbled through the defense and slid the ball past goalkeeper Juergen Macho.
Gokhan doubled the lead from a through pass by substitute Semih Senturk following a counterattack, the right winger easily slipping the ball into the net to seal the victory.
Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel saved a penalty from substitute Erwin Hoffer in the 83rd to end any hopes of a comeback.
