Trochowski rescues Hamburg point
Substitute midfielder Piotr Trochowski scored from a free kick
seconds before the end of stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for
Hamburger SV at home against Bundesliga champion Wolfsburg on
Friday.
Trochowski drilled a shot inside the far post from about 22
meters (yards) out as time ran out.
The late equalizer stretched Wolfsburg's winless streak to 10
games and spoiled new coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner's debut.
Koestner, previously in charge of Wolfsburg's second team, was
promoted on Monday after the firing of Armin Veh.
Edin Dzeko put Wolfsburg ahead with a spectacular move in the
34th minute. The striker controlled a long ball with his chest,
faked defender Joris Mathijsen and then slotted a left-foot shot
inside the post with a low, curling kick.
Before that, however, Hamburg controlled the game and striker
Marcus Berg had several shots narrowly miss the target. Hamburg was
without its new signing Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was still
recovering from a knee injury.
Dzeko nearly scored a similar goal three minutes into the
second half, but his effort went wide.
Hamburg came close to equalizing in the 53rd but defender
David Rozehnal's header bounced off the crossbar. Mladen Petric had
earlier his the post of Wolfsburg's goal.
Wolfsburg's goalkeeper Andre Lenz then turned away a
close-range shot by Marcell Jansen and blocked a shot from Eljero
Elia.
Hamburg kept up the pressure and Wolfsburg's captain Josue
protected his team's lead by clearing a header from Elia on the
line.
But Elia earned the free kick when he was downed by Makoto
Hasebe, giving Hamburg its last chance that Trochowski used to earn
the point.
