Tottenham's link with defender doesn't make sense
Tottenham are linked with Hoffenheim centre back Niklas Sule
Tottenham may choose to add another central defender within the next year, but I don’t think it will be Hoffenheim centre back Niklas Sule. There are two main reason why Spurs won’t be in the market for a defender of his age and experience.
The first, and most profound reason, is that Sule is going to be a very expensive purchase for whichever club moves for him this summer. Reports from Germany claim that Chelsea had a bid of 30 million pounds rejected for him this past window.
It’s only logical to assume that his price isn’t going to decrease as time goes on. He inked a new deal with the Bundesliga club to extend his contract through 2019. That isn’t a huge extension, but it does take the pressure off of Hoffenheim to cash in on him immediately.
As such, Tottenham might have to place a bid of somewhere between 35 and 40 million pounds to bring Sule to White Hart Lane. Given the fact that he’s still just 21-years-old and already a member of the German International team he may well be worth that sort of premium. That doesn’t mean that Spurs will be willing to pay it though.
That brings us to the second reason why a move for Sule seems very unlikely. Tottenham already have a young, talented central defender who they believe has a bright future. American international Cameron Carter-Vickers has really impressed both his manager and teammates with his talent this season.
Carter-Vickers isn’t quite ready to be a Premier League starter yet, but he doesn’t have to be. Both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are squarely in their primes. Tottenham won’t need to add an unquestioned starter for at least another two seasons.
That means that Spurs would be making a bid of 35 or 40 million pounds to buy a central defender who would spend a lot of time on the club’s bench. Call me crazy, but that doesn’t seem like the type of transfer that Daniel Levy is going to sanction any time soon. Niklas Sule may move to the Premier League this summer, but he probably won’t be calling White Hart Lane home.
