Tottenham still winless, Kane goalless after Everton draw

LONDON (AP) Harry Kane and Tottenham's early-season struggles continued on Saturday with a 0-0 draw against Everton leaving the London club without a win after four games.

Kane, the second-highest league scorer in his breakthrough 2014-15 season with 21 goals, is yet to find the net in the new campaign.

Kane, Ryan Mason and Toby Alderweireld were denied by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard's fine saves in the first half.

Tottenham's search for a win will go into September, with a two-week international break now coming up. Before then, the transfer window closes on Tuesday - a final chance before January to sign reinforcements.

Everton has been rebuffing Chelsea's bids for John Stones and the defender helped the visitors keep a clean sheet at White Hart Lane.

Everton has five points from four games and Tottenham has only three.

Everton could have slipped behind in the 24th minute but Howard stuck out his left leg to stop Kane, who only had the United States goalkeeper to beat after collecting a superb pass by Mason.

It was then Mason who was denied by Howard, with Chadli the provider once more and the goalkeeper then steered Alderweireld's header over the crossbar.

In the second half, the pressure built on Everton's goal and it took some scrambling defending and a skied shot by Chadli to keep the match goalless.

Everton forward Romelu Lukaku was also making his presence felt with a couple of challenges and the visitors could have taken the lead only for Arouna Kone to steer a glancing header wide.

The chances dried up for Spurs in the closing stages, in part thanks to the arrival from the bench of the tenacious Steven Naismith, who brought renewed fight to Everton's rearguard action.
